    Eva March Tappan was born just before Civil War in America. She was the daughter of a Baptist minister in New England. She received a Ph.D. in an era when few women undertook such a challenge. After teaching school for 15 years, she published her first book in 1896. She went on to publish more than 50 books that teach history and literature in a clear, easily readable way to children and young people.
